   Living in history

The Town of  Fort Sheridan

 Highland Park and Highwood Illinois

If you are considering the purchase of a home in the Town of Fort Sheridan,

we hope this information answers some of your questions

regarding this wonderfully unique community.

A Brief History of the Town of Fort Sheridan

In 1887, the U.S. government purchased over 600 acres of lakefront property for $5.00 from wealthy industrialists wanting protection from the threat of riots in Chicago.  In the ensuing years, in wartime and in peace time, Fort Sheridan became an integral part of U.S. military history.

After the Army base was closed in 1988, the adjacent towns of Highwood, Highland Park and Lake Forest needed to decide what was to be done with the property. After 10 years of consideration and negotiation, a brilliant development team was chosen to purchase the historic district of the Fort from the Army. The Town of Fort Sheridan, as the new community was named, offered a spectrum of residences in varying styles, sizes and price ranges, to the public. The developers were committed to preserving and respecting the dignity, the history and the architecture significance.

The omnipresent Tower, the new Ronan Road bridge spanning the newly created pond, waterfall and meadow with its bird sanctuary, the rows of Captain’s and Lieutenant’s mansions, ancient Stables and Barracks all handsomely support the historic district now resplendent with new homes, town homes, play lots and gardens.

The Officer’s Club building was renovated by the developers for use as a marketing center in 1998. It was a grand, 11,000 square foot, two-story structure transformed into the perfect venue for welcoming thousands of visitors over five years.  Everyday people would come and share stories of time spent in Fort Sheridan.  This was where they came before being sent to Germany or when they returned from Viet Nam.  This was where they met their wives.  This was where their fathers and grandfathers were stationed way back when.  This was where they actually saw Presidents Roosevelt and Eisenhower, General George Patton.  So many Americans have some kind of a connection to Fort Sheridan.

The new community was a huge success and sales were brisk. Once the earth moving machines, cement trucks and landscapers had done their jobs, there had evolved a lush, "lump in your throat" statement of excellence perched on the bluffs of Lake Michigan.   Today, 500 civilian families (many from other parts of the world) call this landmark "home" and they feel they are privileged to do so.

The Town of Fort Sheridan has been well recognized and awarded.  It is listed in historic registers at community, state and national levels.

What Does the Town of Fort Sheridan Offer its Residents Now ?

Nestled on the lake among the celebrated towns of Highland Park, Highwood and Lake Forest, The Town of Fort Sheridan was touted as “the newest North Shore community in over 100 years.” While its neighboring cities are rich in history and beyond unique and luxurious, the Fort ramps up the level of significance and importance. What other neighborhood welcomes visitors with a statue of Philip Sheridan, on his horse Rienzi, flanked by an American flag waving proudly against the sky?  So sacred are the Parade Grounds in he center of the community that they may never be built on and may only be used as part of a future golf course to be built and maintained by the Lake County Forest Preserves.

As a part of their development plan, the developers donated (and renovated) the old Guard House (the jail, photo above left)) to an organization entitled The Midwest Young Artists.  Their mission is to provide music instruction to young talented musicians. Lessons, lectures and free concerts are offered.  There is a Fine Arts Summer Camp for grades 1-6.

The old theatre is now open to the public as the Rotblatt-Amrany Fine Art Studio.  Its principals are the creators of the Michael Jordan Bronze Statue and other well known masterpieces.  Classes are available for children and adults in sculpting, painting and drawing.  The building will also house a museum and art gallery which will be open to the public.

There is always something going on at the Fort, and there is always something to do.

  • Maybe you love spontaneous walks or bike rides through the beautiful community, around the Parade Grounds, through the meadow and bird sanctuary, or down to the shore and its sandy beach.
  • There are 6 fun play lots throughout the community.
  • Play tennis at the outdoor courts located at the east end of the Parade Grounds.
  • Because the Fort is popular with families with small children, a number of play groups have formed giving new moms (and experienced Moms also!) a chance to visit with others while the children enjoy their young neighbors as well.
  • Nearly every month there is a Ladies’ Night Out for food drinks and laughs at  local eateries.
  • This is a party place and a bash is being planned at any given time of the year.
  • In late summer we love our Community Day, with kid & pet parades, entertainment and a huge picnic on the meadow. It sometimes corresponds with an appearance by the US Navy Band Great Lakes 18-piece Jazz Ensemble.  This is an awesome show.
  • In December we convene at a local restaurant for an evening Holiday Party, with dinner, music and dancing.
  • In Spring there is a family party at a local venue where you can bring the children for food and fun.
  • There is an active Master Homeowners’ Association which meets monthly.  You can get involved with decisions made to benefit the community on a volunteer basis.
  • Each condo and townhome at the Fort has an association which helps to make “maintenance-free” living easy.  These associations welcome your participation on a volunteer basis and have functions in which you may choose to participate.
  • There is a monthly newsletter chock full of news and ideas for all Fort residents.
  • The Master Homeowners’ Association retains Lieberman Management to perform service functions.  Lieberman has set up a website that can be accessed by all residents to view important notices and manage dues payments.
  • The Town of Fort Sheridan is located within Highland Park School Disrict #112, which is an award winning district ell known for its excellence.  Our elementary school, Oak Terrace, is the newest in the district, a $10,000,000 state-of-the-art facility which has the added benefit of dual language programs (on a volunteer basis).  Oak Terrace is a marvelous facility, rich in cultural and educational opportunities for its students and their families.  As word of its unique programs  spreads, the school is becoming well sought after by sophisticated families from Chicago and our surrounding suburbs. Students then go to Northwoods Junior High School and Highland Park High School. There are also a number of private and parochial school options within a short distance of Fort Sheridan.
  • We love the shops and restaurants of Highwood which are within easy walking distance (Starbucks opened across the street!),and we are also located between the downtowns of Highland Park and Lake Forest.  Shopping, entertainment and services of every kind are minutes away.
  • There is a Metra train station across the street from our main entrance for commuters to all north shore communities, Chicago’s north side and downtown Chicago (get there in less than an hour).  We also use this train to drop us off in Ravinia Park for summer concerts and attractions.
